On February 24, 2025, marking three years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the start of Europe’s largest war since 1945, Israel’s representative at the United Nations joined a group of nations in voting against a direct condemnation of Russia for its role in the deaths of thousands of Ukrainian civilians.
The State of Israel, a nation that has endured many wars of self defense and, since October 7, 2023, has faced enormous security threats, failed in this vote to stand with a sister nation defending itself against foreign invasion.
Even if diplomatic considerations played a role in this decision, realpolitik cannot justify such a profound moral failure—one that places Israel on the wrong side of history.
The Reform Movement in Israel and Maram – the Council of Reform Rabbis in Israel – reaffirm the deep bond between Israel and Ukraine. Over the past three years, our communities have welcomed many Ukrainians, whether new immigrants or those seeking temporary refuge from the war. As a movement rooted in its communities, we are deeply aware of their suffering and daily struggles as they navigate an uncertain and often cruel reality.
Every nation has the right and duty to protect its citizens. Just as Israel enjoys broad international recognition of its right to self-defense, so too must Ukraine receive similar recognition—including from the State of Israel. The responsibility to defend one’s people rests with every nation, just as every people has the moral right to live in peace on its land. The international community must remain committed to resolving conflicts through peaceful means. The State of Israel must stand on the side of morality and peace—not alongside those who fuel war.
In calling upon the Source of Peace, we offer a prayer for days of tranquility, quiet, and security.
